Winter Tires

Do I Need Winter Tires in Newfoundland?
During the winter months in Newfoundland And Labrador, your ability to drive well depends on the quality of your tires. The safety of you and your passengers can be compromised if you are under-prepared or uninformed on the different types of tires and their varying purposes year-round. Any regular old tire will not suffice during the harsh winter months in Newfoundland & St. John's. There are several brand names that all offer winter tires, all weather tires and summer tires. Every car is compatible to certain types and sizes of tires. Our tire experts at the tire shop in Newfoundland are here to consult you on which tire you need for optimal safety.
Many drivers choose to forego rotating out their tires for different seasons throughout the year. This is a dangerous choice that can put you, your passengers and other drivers on the road in harm's way. During the cold, winter months in Canada, the roads become too icy and hard-packed with snow to be driven on safely. The roads become so hazardous here in Newfoundland that you are legally allowed to drive with studded tires on your car from November 1st to April 30th. There are studded winter tires, studless winter tires, all weather tires and summer tires; all of which present advantages in differing weather conditions.
There are two types of winter tires (or snow tires): studded and studless. Studded snow tires have metal studs that are embedded within the tread that dig into the ice while you drive. This provides ultimate traction on winter's most dangerous road conditions. Only new tires that have never been driven on can be studded since studding worn tires can risk serious tire damage. Both studded and studless winter tires have sipes that are razor-thin grooves within the tread. Flexible winter tires have these sipes to better grip the snow and ice on the roads. You can find these types of winter tires at our tire center in St. John's.

Summer Tires

Tires that are designed for use in the summer months provide the most traction in dry, wet and warm weather conditions. These tires do not perform well in traction, speed, turning or stopping in cold, snowy or icy months. Non-winter tires become stiff and inflexible when the temperature drops during the winter months. You can extend the life of your summer tires by trading them out during the winter months with snow tires.

All Weather Tires

There is a misconception that all weather tires are truly for every season. Although these tires do hold up better against winter precipitation than summer tires, they do not have all the capabilities that winter tires do. All weather tires are best suited for the spring, summer and fall months since they are designed to handle dry, wet and snowy conditions, but not icy roads.
