5 Signs Your Tires Need to Be Replaced

Car Tire Balance Check

When was the last time you actually looked at your tires? For most drivers, the answer is “not recently enough.” Your tires take the brunt of everything the road throws at them, whether it’s salt-covered highways, freeze-thaw potholes, or sudden weather changes that can go from rain to ice in the same afternoon. The good news is that worn or damaged tires usually give you warning signs before they become a real problem. Here are five to watch for.

1. Low Tread Depth

As tires wear down, their ability to grip wet, icy, or slushy roads drops significantly. Transport Canada recommends replacing winter tires once tread depth falls below 4 millimetres. At that point, they can no longer properly channel snow and slush away from the contact patch.

A quick way to check at home is the toonie test: press a toonie into the tread groove. If the tread reaches the bear’s paws, you’re in good shape. If it only reaches the word “Canada,” it’s time to start shopping. When in doubt, our service team at Terra Nova Buick GMC can measure tread depth precisely with a gauge.

2. Cracks, Bulges, or Bubbles

Take a walk around your vehicle and give the sidewalls a close look. Cracks in the rubber indicate that the tire is drying out and losing flexibility, which is a natural result of aging, heat, and exposure to road chemicals.

Bulges or bubbles are more urgent: they form when there’s an impact from things like potholes or hitting a curb when it’s just one of those days. All that damages the tire’s internal structure. A bulging tire can blow out without warning, especially at highway speeds. If you see either, don’t wait.

3. Uneven Tread Wear

If one side of your tire is noticeably more worn than the other, or you’re seeing bald patches, that’s a sign of a wheel alignment, balancing, or suspension issue. Beyond accelerating tire wear, these problems can cause your vehicle to pull to one side or vibrate at speed. Canadian roads, particularly after a hard winter, are tough on alignment, so it’s worth having it checked any time you notice uneven wear.

4. Vibration While Driving

Some vibration through the steering wheel is normal on rough pavement, but persistent or worsening vibration, especially at highway speeds, is a warning sign. It can point to an imbalanced tire, a damaged tire, or an underlying suspension problem. If the shaking is coming from the tires themselves, get them inspected before the issue gets worse.

5. Tire Age

Even if your tires look fine, age alone is a reason to replace them. Rubber naturally degrades over time, becoming brittle and less flexible regardless of how much tread remains. Most manufacturers recommend replacing tires after 6 to 10 years. You can find the manufacture date on the sidewall. It’s a four-digit code at the end of the DOT number, showing the week and year the tire was made.
